The new Obama art report

Here at the Art Report we're always going on and on (and on and on) about Obama inspired art. Or Obama related art. Or Obama street art. Sometimes even Obama pancake art. Well, we're proud to take a little break from all this art ABOUT Obama, and present you something completely different - Art BY Obama. That's right, in 2007 Barack Obama did the doodle pictured above for "National Doodle Day", an online auction benefitting Neurofibromatosis Inc., a charity dedicated to researching the genetics of tumors found on nerves. The doodle wound up selling for a measly $2,075 (that's less than a Hope print!), though today's value would probably be somewhere in the six figure range. Pictured are Majority Leader Harry Reid, Edward Kennedy, Diane Feinstein and Charles Schumer. According to the owner, the doodle is not for sale, sorry flippers!

Thanks to S. Hurd for the info

Maverick by Mason Fetzer

Mason Fetzer released a new Obama image today- "Maverick". Done in his ever-impressing and accurate stencil style, Mason's latest work is currently available by him directly on eBay. $125 will get you an original spray painted piece in a color of your choice, or you can always opt out for the $17 signed and numbered piece. Great work as always Mason!

Zoltron gets rural

Little late on posting this one (it was before the election after all), but thought it was a nice image-

Thanks for your great site. It's helped me navigate these rough buying waters for fans of Fairey's Obama Hope poster. I was a volunteer for the campaign and have been trying to purchase a poster for myself (unfortunately I missed Monday's special release completely). As I search through all the stuff on ebay, I'm left more confused than ever and am trying hard not to get ripped off. Can you help me with any of these questions?

1. Which version of the Hope prints carry this at the bottom: Illustrated & designed by Shepard Fairey © 2008 Obey Giant. ObeyGiant.com

2.Do all the posters given out or sold by Obama campaign/offices have a matte finish?

3. I've seen the Obama campaign info and the Union symbol on the bottom of Fairey's Change posters, but not the Hope version. Is that correct?

4. Were any of the Hope posters printed on canvas?

Thanks for any info you might have.

Karrie-
1. I just checked both my signed and numbered print as well as my signed paster, and neither one had that info, both came directly from Shepard Fairey and Obey Giant.

2. Interesting question, the Hope pasters given out by the campaign offices should be matte, however the Vote for Change prints given out seem to have all been on glossy paper. I'd be cautious about purchasing any Hope prints on glossy paper - they were probably printed at Kinkos.

3. You are correct about the symbols on the bottom of the Change posters, the same symbols are also on the Vote print (with different photography credits)

4. As far as I know, no Hope prints were printed on canvas. You'll see Change prints on textured canvas on eBay, however as they're all being sold by the same dude, and as he seems to have an unlimited supply, i'd be wary.

Hope that helps!

Dear KH,
Thank you very much for a wonderful site which keeps us all of informed of the amazing art out there. I've been following Shepard Fairey's work and currently was only able to get Vote...I was in Iraq when he released both Progress, Hope and Change. I still can't justify paying Ebay prices though I would like to get at least one of those to complete my collection. My question to you is, since Mr. Fairey detests all the Ebay Flippers and such, why would he not continue to release prints of those titles? I know artists value their work tremendously but rather than have all these 'fake' prints out their with his work, why not continue to produce these prints? As long as it covers costs and he is able to make a profit/ donation, why limit his releases?
At first I was thinking this may be purely Supply & Demand etc. but he has to admit that his image is THE icon of the Obama movement and many want to own a piece of this. What are your thoughts on his reluctance (as yet) to make further releases?

André

Andre- great question. To date Shepard has released 600 Hope prints, 350 Progress prints, 400 small Progress prints, 400 Vote prints, 350 Rock the Vote prints, 5,000 Change prints, 5,000 Vote prints, 5,000 small Vote prints, 5,000 Yes We Did prints, and hundreds of signed though not numbered Hope and Rock the Vote (DNC version) prints. Of course, that's in addition to the hundreds of thousands (literally) Hope pasters and stickers that were distributed through Campaign offices to supporters.
That's certainly a lot of prints, and to be honest with you, I wouldn't be surprised to see one more hitting before the inaguration (and possibly after)...
Considering all his limited edition prints were sold at affordabel and reasonable prices (especially considering their worth), with over 300,000 pasters being given out for free, I think he's doing a pretty good job of making his art both accessible to the general public, while still ensuring its collectability. As for eBay flippers, yeah it sucks. However, that's just the world we live in... Shep's taken a lot of measures to cut them out (banning them from Obey Giant, limiting prints to one per customer, selling some only in person etc etc), but unfortunately there's only so much you can really do...
Of course, this is all just my opinion, if you agree or disagree, feel free to leave a comment-

Hey,
So I just bought the set of stickerobot.com lim. ed. sticker pack, each sticker individually and saved a ton of money.I was wondering if you guys have found any websites selling the three mini stickers (flores, mac, and hope) or any sites that sell the billi the kid or the Mag sticker. I have searched ebay and cannot find them. Thanks. Also, how much were the sticker packs going for on stickerobot.com? And, do you guys know where Zoltron's office is? Last, where do you have the best chance of meeting any of the artist series (sticker) artists? I got almost two of everything and am looking for shepard fairey to sign the progress. Thanks a ton.

Hasan, as far as I know, there aren't any sites selling the mini stickers, you'll have to search the 'bay for those. If you haven't yet, visit www.artbymags.com she's got some stuff for sale in her Etsy store. The sticker packs were around $35 via Sticker Robot (though they sold out with a quickness). Zoltron's office is actually in Antartica, located in the Fortress of Solitude. Any one with questions regarding stickers or the upcoming Robot Invasion, you can reach him there. As for meeting the artists, check out their websites on a regular basis, find out where they'll be and go from there. Shepard is very cool about signing stuff for fans, if you live (or have friends) in the LA area, he's always djing and putting on charity events out there and I'm sure he'd be down to sign a sticker for you. Another good chance of meeting him would be to make it to DC for the inaguration, I'm sure he'll be at the massive art show that'll be happening there, but more on that later.....

Small Vote and Progress prints now available

In a surprise release today, the official Barack Obama campaign store has dropped a couple interesting print variations. The first is done (obviously) by Shepard Fairey and is basically a combination of his previous Artists for Obama prints, altering the colors from the Change image, and putting it in a Vote context. The second appears to be a re-release of Scott Hansen's Progress print. Both prints are smaller in size than their originals, the Vote is listed simply as being "small" while the Progress print is 14"x24". Neither seems to be signed or numbered, but at $20 and $70 each respectively, they're both reasonable alternatives to the current insane eBay prices.

Both prints are available here:
http://store.barackobama.com/Office_s/600.htm

For those of you looking for the original prints on the 'Bay, take heed! With this dual release, we can exect ebay flippers to start taking advantage of this within the next couple days. Please be extra careful reading item descriptions, I'm sure there will be many of these prints mis-represented as being the OG Artists for Obama releases.

Obama x Hendrix by Michael Murphy

Obama/Hendrix Mash-up from michael murphy on Vimeo.

Proving himself to be a man of many talents, Michael Murphy has just released a mash-up video he did this weekend amalgamating Barack Obama's accetance speech with Jimi Hendrix's 1969 Woodstock rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Done in a Waking Life rotoscopic style, Murphy has synced up both video clips without altering either time code. Definitely some nice patriotic eye candy, click above and let it load to watch!

Word on the Street...

Never ones to engage in rumours or speculation (God knows there's plenty of speculation on eBay right now), we here at the Art Report are very hesitant to report on heresay... unless it's looking real juicy...

Apparently, Shepard Fairey and his team are currently in the works to put on a new Manifest Hope-like show to celebrate Barack Obama's inauguration... No real word on the details yet, but from what we've heard this is going to be big. Like BIG, big.

For those of you new to the Art Report, here's a little crash course: At the DNC in Denver this year the good folks at MoveOn and Obey Giant put on a massive art show, Manifest Hope. Taking place in a recently built-out warehouse, Manifest Hope featured amazing art by some of the very best artists out there including Shepard Fairey, Ron English, David Choe and Sam Flores to name a few. If you'd like to see some photos of the great art, party and musical perfomances, check out this Flickr photoset:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/a35mmlife/sets/72157607054504692/

Well, like I said, I don't have any details yet, but rest assured, this is probably going to be the largest and most talked about art show this year. If any of you have been on the fence about heading to D.C. for the inaguration... buy your tickets now! For all you artists out there as well, probably a good idea to put your pencils up, if this is anything like last time there will probably be another call for submissions.

More info to come when we get it...

"I ordered a free yes we did sticker, and was wondering if I can make a twenty dollar donation to get fifty stickers, or if they won't let me since I already asked for once set of stickers. Any help/ inf0? Thx."

Hassan, the one per person stipulation from MoveOn was limited to only the signed and numbered prints. To date MoveOn has sold or given away over 3 million stickers, and I'm sure if you gave them your donation, they'd be more than happy to send you some more.

Anne K writes:

How do you think the type of paper and type of print impacts value of signed prints? For instance, there seems to be a big variation of prices for signed prints that on thin or thick paper and/or offset vs lithograph, etc. Thoughts?

Anne, first off when it comes to thickness of paper. The reason thinner paper Shepard Fairey prints sell for less is simply because the thin paper prints are either neither signed nor numbered, or were just simply signed at a fundraising event. The official releases for Hope, Progress and Progress (small) were all printed on thick paper and are all signed and numbered. In terms of type of prints: Hope is an offset lithograph, while the two Progress prints are screenprints. The value for these is not so much judged by the type of printing, but rather the size and scarcity. Hope that helps!

Obamabats

Designer Jeff Domke has recently released a set of 24 true type dingbats available for free download. What's a dingbat you ask? A dingbat is a type of ornament used traditionally in typesetting. It's name is actually an onomatopoeia, derived from the days of old metal-type prints shops when an ornament was dinged into place and bated tight to be ready for inking. (At least according to wikipedia :-) Domke's basic premise behind this project is that by offering 24 different ornaments available for free download, it's possible for artists and designers to rearrange and compile them as they see fit, allowing users to create their own Obama images for posters, t-shirts etc.

Green Abraham Obama bust - pre order

Fresh Manila has just released the green colorway of Ron English's Abraham Obama bust series. To date black and white versions have been released (and quickly sold out), making this the third in the 15 inch vinyl series. Limited to only 50 copies (there are 22 left for sale), this bust will run you $200 and is available now for pre-order from Fresh Manila: www.freshmanila.com

While we're on the subject of Ron's Abraham Obama, Toy Tokyo now has print versions of English's now classic image for sale as well. We're assuming this is the same release as available at Jet Set Graffiti, meaning unsigned and unnumbered on thin semi glossy paper.
If you've missed out on the Upper Playground prints and can't afford eBay prices, you can pick up this poster here:

Stop the H8

As many of you know, Election day marked several humongous strides forward for us as Americans when we elected our first President of African American descent. However, it was a day of commiseration for many Californians and Americans as well. Tacked onto the ballot here in the Golden State was the hottest and most controversial statewide issue to be eclipsed by the Presidential Election - Proposition 8. On June 16th of this year, the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage, making California the only other state in this great country (after Massachusetts) where same sex couples were allowed civil union. Proposition 8, the "Eliminates Rights of Same Sex Couples to Marry Act" however, passed this the Tuesday before last, stripping many Americans of their but recently acquired and fought-for rights. Like I said, Election Day was a day in which we took many strides forward... but at the same time, depressingly, many steps back.

This Saturday the 15th at 10:30 AM there is a rally at the Los Angeles city hall to turn back Prop 8. Shepard Fairey has created the image pictured above and has made it available for free download to anyone who'd like to use it in protest. In an attempt to continue raising funds for the movement, expect signed and numbered copies to begin surfacing in the coming weeks.
